How to register for a Red Seal exam: start with your province or territory

Ready to book your Red Seal exam? Start with the apprenticeship authority for your province or territory. There is no single Canada-wide booking form, and the route that worked for a colleague may not match your training or work history.

Find the authority responsible for your application

Red Seal examinations are administered through provincial and territorial apprenticeship and certification authorities. The official contact directory is the best starting point for locating yours. Use the authority's own website for current forms and contact details.

Ask which eligibility route applies to you

Requirements can differ by trade and by whether you are applying as an apprentice or an experienced trade qualifier. The official registration guide directs candidates to confirm eligibility with their province or territory. Do not assume that a colleague's route or required work experience is the same as yours.

  • What is the exact trade title for my application?
  • Which application route matches my training and work history?
  • What supporting records do I need, and who must verify them?
  • Which steps must be completed before I can book an exam?

Confirm the details that affect your schedule

Ask for current fees, available dates, booking deadlines and the process for changing an appointment. These details can change, so a remembered price or an old forum answer is a poor basis for planning.

Keep a single folder with the instructions, submitted documents and confirmation messages. Write down the date and reference number of any conversation that changes what you need to do.

  • Which exam language can I choose?
  • How do I request an accommodation, and how early must I apply?
  • Which standard or exam version should I use when preparing?
  • How will I receive my results and learn about next steps?

Build your study plan once the route is clear

While the application is being processed, organise your notes against the official trade resources. Keep administrative tasks separate from practice tasks: 'send the work-history form' and 'review a weak topic' need different kinds of attention.

Pass Red Seal provides independent practice tools. Enrolment here does not register you for the official exam, establish eligibility or replace a provincial or territorial certificate.
