The night before your exam is a bad time to discover you have the wrong address or an unanswered question about ID. Get the practical details out of the way early. This checklist gives you a few things to confirm, pack and plan before the morning arrives.

A week before: read the booking instructions

The standard Red Seal exam writing time is four hours and the pass mark is 70%. Your appointment details, permitted materials and any approved accommodations should be confirmed with the authority administering your exam.

  • Check the exact date, location, arrival time and contact number.
  • Confirm the required identification and whether your name matches the booking.
  • Ask which calculator, code books or other materials are permitted or supplied.
  • Confirm your exam language and any accommodations already arranged.

The evening before: prepare a small, checked kit

Set out only the items your instructions permit. Save the address and contact details somewhere available without mobile data. If you drive, check parking; if you use transit, choose a backup route.

Keep your last review narrow. A short look at your error log is more manageable than opening a new chapter and trying to finish it before bed. Put unfamiliar topics on a list for future study instead of turning the whole evening into a new practice exam.

Decide how you will check your pace

Use the actual question count for your trade to estimate a workable pace. Leave part of the session for checking unanswered questions and recorded responses. Practise that approach beforehand so the timing is familiar.

As a planning example, reserving 30 minutes of a four-hour session leaves 210 minutes for the first pass. Divide that by your trade's question count to estimate a checkpoint, not a strict deadline for every question. Some questions will take longer than others.

At the desk: follow the supplied instructions

Read the instructions before answering and ask the invigilator about anything unclear. Check that the response you record corresponds to the question you are answering. Build that check into your routine rather than leaving it until the end.

After the exam, follow the authority's instructions for results and next steps. A private preparation platform cannot issue your result or your trade certificate.
