How to prepare for your Red Seal exam

You know your way around the job. Preparing for an exam asks something different: sitting down with topics you might not use every week. Start with your trade's exam breakdown, then use a short practice session to work out where to spend your time.

Red Seal exam format and pass mark
The official Red Seal preparation guide sets a 70% pass mark and a four-hour writing time. Questions are multiple choice, with four options and one correct answer. The question count and topic distribution depend on your trade.
Confirm the instructions for your sitting, including permitted reference materials, with your apprenticeship authority.
| Exam detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Pass mark | 70% |
| Writing time | 4 hours |
| Format | Multiple choice, with one correct answer |

Find the requirements for your trade
Your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority determines eligibility and registration. Use the official Red Seal trade directory to find your occupational standard and exam breakdown. The standard describes the work activities, tasks and skills covered by your trade.
Keep that breakdown beside your study plan. A familiar task from your job may be easy for you, while another task needs deliberate practice. Treat your first study sessions as a way to find those gaps.

Build a practical study plan
Choose a session length you can repeat around your work schedule. A 30-minute session can have a specific outcome: practise one topic, record two mistakes, and decide what to revisit tomorrow. Completing more questions is less useful if you cannot explain the answers.
Here is an example four-week plan. Extend a phase if it exposes a gap; the dates are a planning aid, not a promise of exam readiness. Reserve a little time for mixed practice even when one block is difficult. It helps you check whether a concept still makes sense when the next question comes from a different topic.
| Phase | Study focus | Useful outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Try a short session across each study block. | A list of topics you can explain and topics you need to revisit. |
| Week 2 | Work on your weakest topics in focused sessions. | A short note explaining each corrected mistake in your own words. |
| Week 3 | Mix topics and revisit earlier mistakes without looking at notes. | A comparison of fresh answers with your earlier results. |
| Week 4 | Practise a timed sitting and review the uncertain answers. | A pacing plan and a final list of concepts to review. |
Turn wrong answers into your next session
Give each mistake a reason: a concept you did not know, a calculation error, a term you misunderstood, or an important detail you skipped. Those reasons suggest different next steps. Repeating a calculation helps with arithmetic; rereading the same question does little for a concept you have not yet understood.
Record the pattern of mistakes and check it in a later session. Repeatedly answering a familiar set can improve a score without showing whether you can solve a new problem.
In Pass Red Seal, explanations and progress by block help you review this work. A practice score is a study signal, not a guaranteed result on the official exam.
